The Ugly Truth

Gerard Butler
and Katherine Heigl star in a hilarious comedy with a romantic twist. Gerard plays Mike Chadway, a pessimistic T.V. host who believes he has all relationships figured out.Heigl plays Abby Richter, a romantically challenged news producer. The Ugly Truth really gets deep down into relationships and shows what men and women assume about each other. This film opens up a lot of "hidden secrets" that people don't like to talk about.

When Abby meets Mike, she cannot stand him and everything he stands for. Abby convinced that she will find the perfect man, the man of her dreams. Mike tells Abby that there is no such thing, all men want is some ass. Abby and Mike make a deal that he will tell her everything to do, from what she says to what she wears in order to make her neighbor fall for her. If her neighbor does fall for her, than Abby can't complain about what Mike talks about on her show.

There are hilarious scenes all throughout this movie, including some twists. Gerard Butler is an amazing actor and his character fits him well. Together, Heigl and Butler make a great couple for a movie. However, The Ugly Truth is just like any other romantic comedy. Girl meets boy.. girl hates boy.. girl falls in love.

Cinematical.com says, "The answer is because The Ugly Truth actually knows next to nothing about dating advice, the behaviors of men and women, or much of anything else romantically human. It's a factory widget created in a boardroom." They are exactly right, this film does not portray any correct behaviors that a relationship would have.

Law Abiding Citizen

Written by Kurt Wimmer, Law Abiding Citizen is an intense movie of redemption. It involves mystery, horror and action. Viewers are taken on a roller coaster ride through the life of Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler). Clyde takes it upon himself to teach justice after the justice system fails to do so.

The movie opens up with Clyde, his wife and his daughter. Two robbers break into his house and kill his family as he lays tied up and helpless. After the opening scene we meet Philadelphia prosecutor, Nick Rice (Jaime Foxx) who helps Clyde get "justice" for the death of his family. However, when only one robber, Clarence Darby (Christian Stolte) agrees to testify against the other, Darby is only given three years in jail while the other is given the death sentence. Clyde does not handle this settlement lightly. He describes the justice system as "fucked up." Clyde is distraught, he lost everything he loved in life. All he wanted was the robbers killed for what they did to him and his family, but because Nick made a deal with a murderer there was nothing Clyde could do.

Ten years go by and it is time for the robbers death trial, after the lethal injections are set in the robber is in agony pain, all his veins pop out of his body and he is killed. Lethal injections are made to be painless, Nick is on top of this case and knows someone planned this awful death. He first points his finger at Darby. The police think Darby got away but little do they know it was Clyde who caused the painful lethal injections and who now has Darby kidnapped in a warehouse. Clyde proceeds to rip Darby open while he is lying helpless and alive on a table. This was Clyde's revenge for his families death.

Afterwards, Clyde is placed into jail. He brings Nick and his co-workers on a wild goose chase throughout the rest of the movie. They believed that Clyde was just a normal guy who was mourning the death of his loved ones, but soon come to realize he is an ex-spy whose specialty was low-impact kinetic operations. There are more deaths, more action and extraordinary amounts of intensity. Clyde's only purpose is to make a point of how fucked up the justice system is. He questions what ever happened to right and wrong, why should murderer's be let out on the streets when they are so obviously guilty.

The acting throughout this movie is remarkably believable. Especially Gerard Butler, who really had to train his mind to look, act, and think like a murdering spy. In the beginning of the movie he starts off with sad emotions, by the end of the movie he just has blank stares of seeking revenge. The LA Times says,"Gerard Butler is crazy for 'Law Abiding Citizen': This is the Hannibal Lecter role." I believe the comparison of Clyde to Hannibal is perfect, even down to the caged in jail cell where Clyde is served steak and steamed vegetables after a bargain with the police.

I highly recommend seeing this movie. Your brain won't stop trying to figure out the mysteries. Check out the trailer below.

Alice in Wonderland

Since I was younger I have always loved Disney movies. I remember the first time seeing Alice in Wonderland, I had no idea what was going on. I didn't understand any of the songs or the concept of the movie. Now that Tim Burton's sequel Alice in Wonderland is coming to theaters March 5th, I had to watch the cartoon. Since I'm older I portray Alice in Wonderland entirely different.

The film is based on Lewis Carroll's novels, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Alice voice by Kathryn Beaumont (also voice of Wendy in Disney's Peter Pan) is a 12-year-old girl who gives herself good advice, but does not take others good advice. She has no patients and is very curious. One day when she is getting a lesson from her mother, Alice thinks of a world where everything will be different. When Alice sees a white rabbit (Bill Thompson) with a stop watch running fast saying, "I'm late I'm late I'm late for a very important date," she can't help but follow him.

Alice proceeds to fall down a rabbits hole, transporting her to Wonderland. She embarks on insane, or "mad" adventures, leading her to encounter a Caterpillar (Richard Haydn), the Cheshire Cat (Sterling Holloway), and the Madd Hatter (Ed Wynn). Alice grows and shrinks all throughout the movie when she eats a cookie and mushrooms. She is confused during her time in Wonderland, no one will answer her questions and she can't seem to keep the white rabbit around long enough to ask where he's going.

There have been many assumptions that Alice in Wonderland is based off of psychedelic drugs. Metromix.com says, "While on the surface it’s an animated story for children that explores the importance of self-reliance and a powerful imagination, it also features a hookah-smoking caterpillar who puffs in Alice’s face, a psychotic Queen of Hearts, mushrooms that change Alice’s perception of the world and enough psychedelic colors to cause an acid flashback." After watching this movie, I really do see the drug trip through Alice's experiences. Many say during the Madd Hatter's tea party, one of the tea pot's has a marijuana leaf on it. I did see the leaf on the coffee pot, but I most definitely can not say that it is for sure a marijuana leaf. Another assumption is when Alice eats the mushroom to grow bigger and smaller, she is on a shroom trip. Although many people believe Alice in Wonderland is full of references to drugs, no one is certain.

It is very ironic that a Disney children's movie is presumed to be about psychedelic drugs. This movie is loved by little children all over the world and by stoners everywhere, all because of the intense colors and the wild adventure's Alice is brought on. Check out the trailer below.

Requiem for a Dream

Requiem for a Dream is one of the most intense movie I have ever seen. A mother and son's drug addiction causes them to shatter all their hopes and dreams. This film really takes you into a lives of a drug addict. When they are tripping, you almost feel as though you are too. The movie really pulls you in, causing you to feel the characters pain and anguish.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, Requiem for a Dream has an amazing cast who really capture the world of a speed and heroin addict. This movie is about Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto) who is highly addicted to heroine, causing him to constantly take his mothers T.V. and sell it for money in order to buy drugs. Harry's mother, Sara Goldfarb (Ellen Burstyn) would do anything for her son because he is all she has left. Every time Harry sales her T.V, she buys it back. She doesn't want to offer her son money but can't say no to him. Sara soon gets caught up in the drug world herself. She recently finds out that she has won a contest to be on T.V. Sara becomes obsessed with loosing weight in order to fit into her red dress for the show. Sara goes to the doctor where he prescribes her speed and sleeping pills in order to help her to loose weight. The Doctor does not care about her health, he is just trying to make money.

Harry's best friend, Tyrone (Marlon Wayans), is his partner in the drug world. Together they shoot up heroin and try to sell drugs for a living. They are too addicted to even comprehend how to sell the drugs. Harry's girlfriend, Marion Silver (Jennifer Connelly), is just as caught up into drugs as Harry, Sara and Tyrone. Instead of shooting up heroin, Marion snorts it. The love Harry and Marion have for each other is real, but the addiction they have for heroin overpowers their love. When Marion can't find a fix she becomes desperate and ends up selling her body for heroin.

MovieRapture.com says,"There is not a performer who appears in the movie who does not give a vibrant life to his character. Ellen Burstyn exposes Sara's pathetic loneliness and isolation. Jared Leto has a wonderful edginess and hesitancy that allow the viewer to sympathize with the young addict. Marlon Wayans brings out Tyrone's innocence, and Jennifer Connelly reminds the moviegoer of the sadness of a young woman who is ultimately willing to do nearly anything to obtain the drugs she craves."

This movie takes you on a crazy adventure and leaves you thinking. Reelviews.net says, " Don't be fooled by the passively poetic title; there's nothing serene or restful about this motion picture. Requiem for a Dream gets under your skin and stays there." This statement is extremely true. After watching Requiem for a Dream you won't be able to stop thinking about the dysfunctional lives of these four characters.

The Big Lebowski

The Big Lebowski, directed by Joel Coen, is a movie that I would have probably never seen if my friends didn't make me watch it the other night. I never even heard of the movie before. To my surprise I thought it was very amusing. The comedy in this movie is more laid back, and the characters are extremely believable in that they aren't even trying to be funny.

This film stars Jeff Bridges who plays "The Dude," a stoner in his 40's who's real name is Jeffrey Lebowski. One day when The Dude is going to the bathroom two thugs break into his apartment and start to beat him up. However, the robbers mistaken The Dude for millionaire Jeffrey Lebowski (David Huddleston) who also happens to live in the same town. After the thugs realize they have the wrong guy they proceed to pee on The Dude's rug and leave. The Dude is extremely upset that the thugs just ruined his favorite carpet which "brings the room together." All he knows he is not going to be the one to pay for his carpet, so he finds someone that will.

The Dude finds Jeffrey Lebowski (who the robbers were really looking for) and tells him about the thugs. The Dude does not care what Lebowski got himself into, he just wants a new rug. After The Dude gets into a huge fight with Lebowski he leaves his office and tells Lebowski's employee's that he was told he could have any rug in the house.

Later when The Dude is home he receives a phone call from Lebowski asking for his help. Lebowski tells The Dude that his wife, Bunny (Tara Reid) was "kidnapped" and asks for him to deliver one million dollars to the crooks in order to find out if they are the same men who peed on his rug. The Dude and his partner in crime, Walter (John Goodman) are dragged through a wild adventure that they never expected. All because The Dude is mistaken for the towns millionaire, he encounters mission he never wanted to be a part of. All he wanted was a new rug for his run down apartment.

This film was made in 1998, which is probably why I have never heard of it before. The acting in this movie is very out of place for the actors, but I could not think of anyone else better to play these roles. It is a hilarious comedy that I highly recommend.

Anchorman

Anchorman is still one of my all time favorite comedy movies. Although it has many witty remarks, you have to love that sense of humor. If you enjoy any more starring Will Farrel then this is a must see. Its a hilarious spin off of the 1970's.

Former head writer of Saturday Night Live, Adam McKay and Will Farrel are the writers of Anchorman, which explains why this movie is so funny. This film is about sexist Ron Burgundy, (Will Farrel) San Diego's top-rated anchorman and the problems he encounters when a women, Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) is chosen to be the new anchorman. Ron and the other anchormen, Brian Fantana, (Paul Rudd) Brick Tamland (Stever Carell) and Champ Kind (David Koechner) have a hard time adjusting to a women being an anchorman. The men give Veronica a very hard time at work by pulling perverted stunts to try and make her quit.

After Ron falls for Veronica he starts to accept her as another anchorman. However, Ron's love for Veronica will never amount to the love he has for his anchorman position. One day Ron has a traumatic experience causing him to miss his news cast. Veronica takes over Ron's position, and Ron is unable to handle this change. Ron and his co-workers embark on interesting adventures as they try and take back their news cast while trying to stay top rated.

Not only is Anchorman written by amazing writers, but they could not have got a better cast. Each character has a different attribute to them that you can't help but laugh at. The New York Times says, ''Anchorman,'' written and directed by a former ''Saturday Night Live'' head writer, Adam McKay, is studiously harmless." If you have not seen Anchorman you are missing out.

The Blind Side

The Blind Side, directed by John Lee Hancock is an all around touching and amazing movie. This movie really shows the love that a mother has for her family. It is a perfect film for men because of football and hard work, while at the same time it is perfect for women because it portrays the love of a family. I highly recommend this movie to all ages and all families.
The Blind Side is based on the 2006 book, The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game by Michael Lewis, which is a true story based on Baltimore Ravens player, Michael Oher played by actor Quinton Aaron. Michael is a 17-year old African American boy who has been in foster care his entire life. He would much rather be living on his own resulting in him always running away from his foster families. Michael is accepted into a private school called Wingate Christian School after the football coach realizes his size. Because Michael is noticeably out of place he becomes the talk of the town.

One night the Tuohy family, father Sean Tuohy (Tim McGraw), mother Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock), daughter Collins Tuohy (Lily Collins) and son S.J. (Jae Head) are driving home from a school event when they realize Michael walking on the road alone in the pouring rain. Leigh Anne tells her husband to pull over and proceeds to invite Michael home with them after realizing that he has no home to go to. As the story unravels Michael becomes part of the Tuohy family. Together the family work with Michael to help him become an A student and a fierce football player.

In order to truly understand the love that the Tuohy family has for Michael you have to see the movie for yourself. Not only did this film have an amazing plot, but the acting was phenomenal, especially Sandra Bullock. The Los Angeles Times says, "Sandra Bullock and newcomer Quinton Aaron have a warm and winning chemistry in director John Lee Hancock's fact-based story of a football-loving white family's adoption of a homeless black teen." My favorite thing about this movie is that its not a made up story, its based on the real life of Michael Oher and the struggles he went though to be where he is today.

Role Models

In order to enjoy Role Models you have to have a good sense of humor. Personally I found it to be hilarious but the sarcasm is very clear. To truly appreciate this movie you must go into it with an open mind due to many offensive scenes and crude language. Feminist, watch out.

Paul Rudd stars as Danny Donahue and Seann William Scott as Wheeler. Danny, a pessimistic man in his 30's woke up one morning realizing he has wasted the last 10 years of his life working as a salesman for Minotaur energy drink, a job he hates. On the other hand, Wheeler, Danny's perverted best friend could never be happier working as the mascot for Minotaur. Danny's day couldn't get any worse until he drives the Minotaur monster truck up onto a statue outside of a high school accompanied by Wheeler. Instead of the men receiving jail time, the court orders them to do 150 hours of community service at Sturdy Wings, a program designed to pair children with adult role models. Sturdy Wings in run by Gayle Sweeny, (Jane Lynch from The 40 Year Old Virgin) a kooky ex-drugy who does not want to put up with Danny or Wheeler's "bullshit."

Danny is partnered up with Augie Farks, Christopher Mintz-Plasse often recognized as McLovin from Superbad. Augie is a strange boy who is fixated on medieval times role-playing games and even gets Danny involved. Wheeler is partnered up with Ronnie Shields (Bobb'e J Thompson), a loud mouth little boy who is obsessed with "boobies." At first Danny and Wheeler can't stand their Little's, they have no idea how they are going to make it through 150 hours with them. They even contemplate whether jail is a better option. Danny and Wheeler stick it out and together these four embark on wild expeditions.

I was hysterically laughing in every scene of this movie. Peter Travers from the Rolling Stone says, "Sometimes a shamelessly stupid, proudly profane R-rated comedy is all you want out of life. Role Models more than fills the bill. It's killer funny." Each actor was perfect for the roles that they played. The biggest irony of this movie is that Danny and Wheeler are not good role models for any child, but they some how manage to become the perfect role model for their Little's. Not only is the plot hilarious, but touching as well.

If your still unsure of whether or not you would enjoy this movie, check out the trailer below
